Living Healthy with Melly Bergland

Melly Bergland from The Unforgettable Institute, Curacao, shared lots of valuable information with us last week during his short visit to Aruba upon our invitation. Melly is a physical education teacher who later also studied nutrition and became an NLP Coach. His knowledge, preparation and education has helped him help hundreds of people over the past 30 years but most of all its his passion for helping others that stands out when you speak to him. As Melly said: start out by wanting to help other people and you will accomplish whatever you set out to do.

I immediately recognized Melly when I went to pick him up at the airport, without knowing what he looked like.

It was the energy, the way he walked towards the car and shook my hand. Here was a man with purpose, passion and a mission. We set out for an interesting one day visit where I learned a lot about weight loss, weight care and living a healthy lifestyle as the key to happiness.

Throughout the day I made it a point of checking

out what Melly ate and drank so I could learn from his actions. And yes; he ate and drank exactly as he writes in his book Bukito which he publishes once a month to help people live healthy lives. He drinks a lot, eats little but healthy and moves a lot. I also noticed he is very observant and has an internal quietness that is very comforting; its as if he knows……

During his presentation he is passionate, funny, convincing, strong, straight to the point and at times a drill sergeant who wants you to adopt his way or the highway. People like him, they are fascinated, at times intimidated, but at all time, interested and intrigued. Quite an experience listening to Melly and learning about eating right and living well.

To me what interested me the most was how Melly managed to build up his business, help people, enjoy what he does, still enjoy what he does, developed a system that works, and makes a living out of his passion. A health and fitness guru from Curacao, the Caribbean, who can stand his own among any health and fitness guru in the world.

Passion to reach your weight loss goals!

Passion is the willingness to suffer to reach our goals, with the accent on the willingness. Passion is certainly a necessary ingredient when we talk weight loss goals because there certainly is a great deal of suffering when we put ourselves to reach our weight loss goals. We have to watch what we eat, when we eat, how much we eat, how much we move, when we move, how we move, how we deal with temptation, how we deal with negative factors or people around us, and we have to deal with hunger and body pains!

My coachees have certainly demonstrated a lot of passion these past weeks. We meet once a week during our group coaching session where they share their successes and challenges and where we focus on action goals for the coming week. We also have a section called “How to..” where we share tips on how to loose weight.

One such tip is as follows: one of my coachees has to entertain a lot for her work so she is constantly tempted by these lavish dinner parties. So the tip from her was to go ahead and order a salad for appetizer and finish it completely, order an entrée but not finishing it completely, just taking a few small bites, pretending you are enjoying your dinner and play around with the food on your plate. Then for dessert, order some nice green tea.

She went on to say: “The trick is to not tell people I am on a diet because it is then that everybody wants to give their unsolicited opinion: “Why? One dinner will not hurt? Don’t be so hard on yourself!” And many more of such comments that do not do you any good.” So, better to not say anything, follow the tip and stick to your weight loss goals. And guess what: this helped my coachee during a very stressful week of non-stop entertaining clients; she was able to stick to her weigh loss goals and continue to loose weight! Yeah!!

Another one of my coachees lost another 10 pounds by sticking to his plan and by realizing that he did not want to come to our coaching group having to explain that he did not stick to his plans; the group holds him accountable for his actions in a positive way.

Another success story is the story of my coachee who entered a weight loss challenge program and so far is the biggest female looser! We meet with her group once a week, where they share their stories, but most of all, they cheer each other on. This group has formed a bond amongst themselves that is strong and is based on the fact that together they will reach their goals. It is beautiful to see how they encourage each other to continue, not to give up, to hold on to their dreams.

All in all, it has been a beautiful week with stories about goals and passion to share with you. Catch me again next week for more uplifting stories and testimonials.
